Starting Out: Improvisation For The Unsuspecting

A beginning session, starting with an emphasis on play and honoring the individual. Students slowly build a foundation of trusting their experience in the moment, taking risks outside the comfort level, and choosing surprising, strong action through deepening self-awareness. Everyone participates in the first half of these sessions and volunteer themselves for solo and fun scenes in the second half…. and yes, there will be homework.

Next Session with Improvisation

A fast paced, exciting class – creating trust in oneself and the group, strengthening commitment, and taking risks outside the comfort level. Improv introduces the student/artist to their untapped gifts and abilities through participation in scenes, songs, group poems, and character work – as well as ensemble long form. This class increases confidence and self-awareness, surprising the individual and the group. Everyone participates and yes, there will be lots of laughter.

Scene Work

The actor is encouraged to bring in a memorized short scene from a play or movie – either with scene partner(s) or as a solo piece. Each scene partner will be coached to create a deep, individual expression of truth, relaxation, moment to moment naturalistic behavior, and the joy of discovering oneself as the character. Scenes/monologues are to be emailed to the instructor in advance of class.
